Papua New Guinea (PNG) is a less well known in the specialty coffee scene than its neighbor, Indonesia, but has recently begun producing really high-quality coffees. The majority of coffee in PNG, 85%, is still produced by small-holder farmers. However, a lack of infrastructure as well as transportation difficulties has traditionally kept PNG coffee from reaching specialty levels.

This coffee comes from Baroida Estate which has been in operation since the 1960s. The majority of higher-end specialty coffee coming out of PNG is via estates like this one, but the importer we’re purchasing from is beginning to invest more heavily in the region with the goal of creating more opportunity for small producers.
